Eternal life is a dream that people have long shared. Even Lord Krishna and Arjun – the heroes of Mahabharat and the Kurukshetra war envied the god’s immortality. The reason we know that is because someone took the trouble to transfer those texts and information to the various new media that emerged over the centuries: First papyrus and carving on stone and clay tablets, parchment on leather, then paper. Nowadays, of course, we have digital copies of the Mahabharat on DVD, Pen drive and Hard Drives. But for How Long? “Nothing Lasts Forever” This phrase equally applies to the dilemma facing data and texts storage. If one day the Earth ceases to exist, there will be no memories of the world we used to inhabit, no more than stardust flying through the universe.

શાશ્વત જીવનનું સ્વપ્ન લોકો લાંબા સમયથી જુએ છે. મહાભારત ના મુખ્ય નાયક, ભગવાન શ્રી કૃષ્ણ અને અર્જુન અને કુરુક્ષેત્રનું યુધ્ધ પણ ઈશ્વરની અમરતાની અદેખાઈ કરાવે છે. આ બધુ આપણે જાણીયે છીએ એનું કારણ એક જ છે કે કોઈએ સદીઓથી આ બધા ગ્રંથો અને માહિતીને  સમયાંતરે  અલગ અલગ મીડિયામાં બદલવાની તકલીફ  લીધી છે: સૌ પ્રથમ વનસ્પતિનો રસ, માટીને લિપિને કે પત્થર કોતરીને, ચામડા પર લખીને, અને પછી કાગળ . અત્યારે જો કે આપણી પાસે મહાભારત ડીવીડી, પેન ડ્રાઈવ કે હાર્ડ ડ્રાઈવ માં ડિજિટલ કોપી તરીકે ઉપલબ્ધ છે. પણ આ બધુ કેટલા સમય સુધી? “કંઇ જ હંમેશા માટે ટકતું નથી” આ કહેવત માહિતીનાં સ્ટોરેજ ની મૂંઝવણ માટે સમાન લાગુ પડે છે. જો એક દિવસ પૃથ્વી અંત ના આરે હશે, ત્યાર પછી દુનિયાની માનવ વસવાટ ની કોઈ યાદગીરી હશે નહી, સિવાય કે બ્રહ્માંડ માં ઊડતી રજકણ..!

But, now there is solution of this dilemma. Researchers at Southampton University, UK invented disc using femtosecond laser pulses to inscribe micrometer – scale binary data on nano – structured quartz crystals, named ‘Transparent Crystal Disc’ the size of a two euro coin. Information to be encoded in five dimensions (5D), yielding a storage capacity of 380 TERABYTES, thermal stability up to 1000 Celsius and that the data in crystal can remain intact for 13.8 BILLION YEARS..!!! It seems we will still be able to captivate our ancestors with tales of his victory, for many centuries after the destruction of Earth, assuming we have found a different planet to live on by then..!


 પરંતુ , હવે આ સમસ્યાનું સમાધાન થઇ શકે છે. સાઉથમ્પટન યુનિવર્સિટી, યુકે નાં સંશોધકોએ ફેમટોસેકન્ડ લેસર પલ્સનો ઉપયોગ કરીને કમ્પ્યુટર ડેટાને અતિ સૂક્ષ્મ ડબલ ડિજીટ ઓપ્ટિકલ ડેટામાં રૂપાંતર કરીને નેનો સ્ટ્રક્ચર સિલિકાના પારદર્શક સ્ફટિકમાં ટ્રાન્સફર કરવાની શોધ કરી છે જેને  'પારદર્શક ક્રિસ્ટલ ડિસ્ક' નામ આપ્યું જેની સાઈઝ બે યુરોના સિક્કા જેટલી છે. મુખ્ય ખાસિયતોમાં, માહિતીને પાંચ પરિમાણોથી (5D) કોડ ભાષામાં રૂપાંતરણ, 380 ટીબી (ટેરાબાઈટસ) જેટલી સ્ટોરેજ કેપેસીટી, 1000 સેલ્શ્યિસ સુધી ગરમીમાં સ્થિરતા અને આ ડિસ્કમાં રહેલા ડેટા અધધધ 13.8 બિલિયન વર્ષ સુધી અખંડ રહી શકે છે...!! એવું લાગે છે કે કદાચ આપણે બીજા ગ્રહ પર જીવન શોધી લીધું હશે તો વિશ્વ વિનાશ પછીના હજારો વર્ષો પછી પણ આપણા પૂર્વજોની વિજયગાથા તાજી રાખી શકીશું..!!!
